We Need You, You Need UsArtists:
Joseph Pine and James Gilmore coined the term Experience economy, in an article of the same name in 1998. This article, published in the Harvard Business Review, argued that for successful businesses the value of goods and services is far less than the value of a personal experience. Whilst being highly contentious and broadly criticised, the concept of the ‘experience economy’ permeates discourse around cultural production internationally, theorised broadly across design theory, hospitality and tourism marketing and in critical discourse around socially-engaged practice. Using this concept as a frame, this exhibition reflects uniquely on the economic position of the artist, examining real and potential contexts for presentation and distribution of art and drawing on ideas of outsourced labour, durational performance, investment and dividends.
